ParkerVision's d2p Test and Measurement Center
ParkerVision's online Test Results section is intended to provide real-world device metrics that speak clearly to the unique nature of the d2p technology. There are a number of fundamentally disruptive advances shown by the charts and graphs included within - any one of which represents a significant RF breakthrough. d2p is capable of delivering each of these advantages simultaneously with a single RF transmit chain. We define the RF transmit chain as the functionality of a modulator and power amplifier.
For context, let's discuss measurements of efficiency. The power consumption of the RFIC varies based upon output power. This is measured as PAE (Power Added Efficiency) and is presented in the attached charts. The rest of the system draws a fixed current which is included in the notes at the bottom of each efficiency chart. This fixed current portion included the digital control system that processes the signals and controls the RFIC. It is implemented as a small 65nm CMOS block.
It's notable to discuss each breakthrough in turn. Note that all comparisons are against competing solutions developed for mass production mobile handsets:
1. Most Efficient 3G Solution: For high complexity 3G waveforms (WCDMA, CDMA2000), the d2p system is the world's most efficient transmit chain regardless of the power level at which your phone operates.
See one such example here, as we compare the d2p system versus a blended example of three high volume, high performing solutions sold today. In this example, d2p increases power efficiency by 80-300% versus market leading solutions over the important mid-power ranges.
Efficiency breakthroughs for 3G solutions are highly sought after right now for increased talk-time, reduced heat, and advanced packaging.
2. Most Efficient 4G Solution: For extremely complex 3.9G and 4G waveforms (HSUPA, LTE), the d2p system is the world's most efficient transmit chain regardless of the power level at which your phone operates. Compare the efficiency curve shown for HSUPA with comparable industry curves as they become available and be sure to note the advantage across the entire power control dynamic range.
Efficiency breakthroughs for 3.9G and 4G solutions are highly sought after right now for increased battery life, reduced heat, and advanced packaging.
3. Single Path Multi-Mode: One d2p circuit passed every waveform shown in the Test Results section and numerous others not shown here. It did so without any hardware changes between tests and it showed fidelity that is in compliance with the waveform specifications for each standard. The waveform quality screen captures are self explanatory to those trained in the art. Some key metrics shown include the Rho, EVM, and ACPR figures - all of which show a system operating within specification.
Multi-mode solutions are highly sought after right now for reduced cost and footprint.
4. SiGe Power Amplification: d2p has enabled the world's first practical SiGe power amplification capable of meeting the power requirements for 2G, 3G and 4G standards. Every measurement was taken from a 180nm SiGe RFIC that produced compliant waveforms.
The use of SiGe enables reduced cost and increased levels of integration.
The d2p system delivers all four breakthroughs simultaneously from the same circuit.
